May 15th, 2019 · 20 mins 58 secs

About this Episode

Ilya Yablokov teaches a variety of courses in Russian studies at the University of Leeds. The areas of academic interests are conspiracy theories as a tool of political mobilisation and political communication. His recent monograph 'Fortress Russia: Conspiracy Theories in the Post-Soviet World' explores how political elites in post-Soviet Russia use conspiracy theories for political purposes and to boost social cohesion. He is also working on the second monograph on conspiracy theories exploring the broadcasts of Russia Today and the place of conspiracy theories in it. The second stand of research is post-Socialist media management and the nature of self-censorship in the work of journalists across the former Soviet bloc.
